A series of experiments was recently conducted at Sagamihara, Japan with the intention of detecting some the ions, which though predicted, have eluded detection in laboratory. The other motivation was to look for heavier ions in conditions close to ionospheric D region so that, with the availability of better ion mass spectrometers, these could now be detected by in situ experiments. Results of these experiments point to a new aspect, viz., the existence of neutral cluster molecules, which (a) have ionization potential of less than 10.2 eV, (b) have life times in excess of 90 min and (c) are formed in limited pressure range. Two neutral cluster molecules, which have been detected, are NO(H2O)4 and a molecule with mass number 131, which could probably be H3ONO(H2O)3N2.
