Resistance to the gravitational force is a principal graviresponse in plants, comparable to gravitropism. However, only limited information has been obtained for this graviresponse. To clarify the nature and mechanisms of gravity resistance, we have organized a research team, consisting 18 members. In the current year, we have continued discussions and exchange of information on strategy for understanding gravity resistance. We have also carried out ground-based experiments to clarify the mechanism of signal perception and the roles of cortical microtubules and actin microfilaments in gravity resistance using Arabidopsis mutants as well as hypergravity treatment. The knowledge obtained by these activities was utilized in part for planning space experiments in the Kibo.
