We have discussed current plans of astrobiology in worldwide, especially for searching life on Mars and proposed a new life detection project on Mars. Our proposal was to search methane-oxidizing microbes from a depth of about 5 - 10 cm below the surface at methane emitting sites by fluorescence microscopy combined with amino acid analysis and mass spectrometry. We have also designed a small microscope that is several kg in weight. To save electricity and detect low fluorescent emission, laser diodes (LD) as the illuminant to excite dye-labeled samples and back-illuminated charge-coupled device detectors would be useful, respectively.
