Spherical glasses of Ba(1-x)Lu(x)Ti2O(5+x/2) (x is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 0.45) were fabricated by an aerodynamic levitation furnace. We found the refractive indices of the Ba(1-x)Lu(x)Ti2O(5+x/2) glasses to exceed 2.1 and to increase with increasing substitution ratio by Lu. This result agrees with the empirical rule that introducing heavy ions in a glass tends to increase the refractive index. The high refractive index Ba(1-x)Lu(x)Ti2O(5+x/2) glasses have great potential for optical application.
