A fast heat transport phenomenon occurring in supercritical fluids, known as the 'piston effect', has been studied in relation to the sound wave generation. To clarify the relationship between the thermal energy applied to the fluid and the energy of the sound wave, the density variation has been observed with a time resolution of 1 microsecond in supercritical CO2. The results indicated that about 10 percent of the thermal energy applied to the fluid was used to generate the sound wave near the liquid-vapor critical point.
