As a preparatory study of colloidal crystals of heavy particles under microgravity environments, the ordering formation processes were investigated in salt-free silica suspensions and polystyrene-based latex suspensions under normal gravity by using Kikuchi-Kossel line analysis. Due to the density difference between silica particles and water, there were detectable gravitational pressure effects on the colloidal silica crystals and it was found that the colloidal crystal was contracted vertically. The distortion of crystal in lower part of the suspension was larger than that in the upper part. In salt-free aqueous suspensions of highly-charged latex particles, the phase transitions were newly discovered at an intermediate stage from the stacking structure with multi-variant periodicity to the face-centered-cubic (twin) structures.
