Under condition of normal gravity it is very difficult to determine the fundamental combustion characteristics such as burning velocity of such mixtures. Thus, the microgravity environment realized by free fall method is employed in this experiment. Especially microgravity environment makes it possible to achieve the symmetrical behavior of combustion phenomena even at very lean combustion mixtures due to eliminating the gravity effect. The main conclusion is as follows: The Lewis number (Le = mass diffusivity/thermal diffusivity) becomes smaller than unity for lean mixtures of propane in air or Ar. The flame propagation will be limited by relatively higher heat transfer rate from the flame front to the unburnt mixtures. As the mixture becomes leaner and leaner, the enhanced thermal diffusivity shifts Lewis number to the smaller value and the poor mass transfer conditions make the flame propagation irregular.",
