A preliminary assessment of heating environments during entries to Venus is conducted in order to obtain fundamental characteristics of flows in the shock layer, and convective and radiative heat fluxes transferred to the vehicle surface. A brief inspection of the fundamental physics in the shock layer of the CO2 atmosphere is done, and the thermal and chemical kinetic models are selected according to Park's studies. Uncertainties in physical models are reviewed, and their influences on aerodynamic heating rates are examined. Additional molecular band spectra from CO are newly introduced to radiation code SPRADIAN 2, and its effects on the radiative heating rates are also assessed.
