Impulse generation experiments were conducted using glycerin propellants to obtain the dependence of laser beam energy on laser thruster performance. The radius of the glycerin droplet was 1 to 1.5 mm and the laser beam energy was varied from 60 mJ to 60 J. The maximum specific impulse was measured 18 s at the laser beam energy 55 J. Experimental data were scaled in terms of energy and the radius of the glycerin droplet to extrapolate the thruster performance. It was indicated that the radius of the glycerin droplet should be an order of 0.1 mm to obtain Isp greater than 1,000 s that will be needed to complete with other propulsion systems such as chemical and electric propulsions.
