The values of impact strength in our low velocity impact experiments were found to be more than one order of magnitude lower than previous results of high velocity impact. This discrepancy was thought to be due to the initial pressure and the attenuation rate of the stress wave passing through porous bodies, which may be different during high velocity impacts and low velocity ones. In order to study the attenuation rate of the fragment velocity, we performed a new set of laboratory experiments on porous sintered glass bead targets. We prepared disc targets of porosity about 40 percent with three different thicknesses. Impact experiments were performed using a two-stage light-gas gun for high velocity impacts and a light-gas gun for low velocity impacts. Ejection velocities of antipodal fragments and those also from the rear surface of the targets were measured using high-speed camera images. We found that the attenuation rate of the fragment velocity in sintered glass bead targets can be fitted by a power law whose exponent is about -2 for the two different velocity regimes. We also analyzed previous high-velocity impact experiment results by using high-speed video images. The targets were sintered glass bead spheres with 10-16 percent porosity. The velocity field was different from the ones obtained previously for different porous materials such as sand, mortar, and porous alumina: the ejection velocity of the antipodal point of the sintered glass bead targets was lower than at the impact point but was the local maximum of the values found in the area of the antipode. This is probably due to a more efficient geometrical focusing of the stress wave in sintered glass beads targets in spite of the non-zero porosity.", "subitem_description_type": "Other"}]},
