It has been thought that such tectonic features formed due to the surface extensional stress. In various sources of stress considered, contribution of the stress due to volume change accompanied by phase change is greatly important. In the icy satellites, solidification of the liquid water layer induces a large volume change, and for example, volume change rate due to the phase change from liquid water to low-pressure ice is about + 10 percent. In this paper, the Jovian satellite Europa has been focused on where only phase change to low-pressure ice occurs, and the stress has been evaluated numerically in the ice shell due to phase change.
