After describing the temporal variations of the particle temperature and size, use has been made of the asymptotics to derive the governing equation. It has turned out that the governing equation is exactly the same as that for the non-steady, non-adiabatic “thermal explosion”, that the critical particle diameter can be expressed by the system parameters, as well as thermophysical and physicochemical properties, and that there exists a critical, comprehensive parameter that depends only on the ambient temperature. A fair degree of agreement in experimental comparisons indicates that the present formulation has captured the essential features of the particle burn-out, not only for carbon but also for boron.
