This paper describes a research plan for reusable launch vehicles. Drastic improvement in vehicle reliability and reduction in space flight costs are expected through realizing reusable systems. Although there are two goals, commonality between expendable and reusable systems is taken account of and priority is given to increasing reliability. From this viewpoint, selected were some key technologies that will be intensively developed during the current medium term (from fiscal 2003 to 2007). This paper also reports the status of key technology research on composite material main structure, and advanced avionics and flight control. Another key item is rocket propulsion, and this is described in a different paper. It is aimed to conduct flight demonstration for the key technologies in the next medium term starting from fiscal 2008.
