The shock tube is of simple mechanism, but an ordinary shock tube with diaphragm is not necessarily convenient for quick operations because of both renewal of diaphragm for each operation and contamination by broken segments. To avoid such inconvenience several authors proposed to employ a mechanical or electro-magnetical shock valve instead of the diaphragm. In the present paper a type of the mechanical shock valve for shock tube is proposed, having comparatively simple device of high pressure release. The characteristic performance of the shock tube equipped with this valve is investigated for various modes of the operation; specifically, the process of the shock wave formation is studied by means of the pressure measurements and the streak photographs of the M-Z interferogram.
