A numerical study of flat-plate leading-edge receptivity to sound is carried out by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Based on the results, a new view which explains the physical mechanism is introduced by which energy is transferred from the long-wavelength free-stream disturbances to the short wavelength boundary layer instability waves. It is shown that the receptivity process can be understood more easily by focusing on the movement of vorticity fluctuation pattern.
