An aerodynamic shape optimization of the first configuration of a scaled supersonic jet-powered experimental airplane is conducted using an originally developed design tool. The design tool combines a three-dimensional Euler CFD code with a quasi-Newton optimization technique. An overset-grids technique is adopted to calculate the flow around a complex airplane configuration. An adjoint method is utilized in the optimization process of this design tool in order to reduce the computational costs. The pressure drag of the first configuration of the jet-powered experimental airplane is reduced about 4 (drag count) after optimized its nacelles and fuselage shapes by this design tool.
