A model calculation is made to interpret the quasi-periodic nature of the large eddies in the outer layer of a flat plate turbulent boundary layer, in that the boundary layer flow is modeled by using a 2D discrete vortex method. The power spectrum of velocity fluctuations shows the presence of quasi-periodic motion in the model flow. It is argued that a possible mechanism responsible to the occurrence of the quasi-periodicity might be the inviscid, varicose-mode instability of a symmetric flow which consists of a boundary layer flow and its mirror image with respect to the wall.
