HF (High Frequency) radar-echo observation of Martian surface layers will be performed using 'PWS (Plasma Wave and Sounder)' onboard PLANET-B satellite which will be launched to Mars in 1998. 'ALT' mode of the PWS transmitting 9 MHz (= 33 m wavelength) HF radar has functions of altimetry and measurement of the echo intensities, and it will be applied to (1) global mapping of Martian surface topography, (2) mapping of radar reflectance, and (3) exploring subsurface layers and their local variation. In this paper we numerically simulate HF radar echoes from the surface having the model electromagnetic properties to examine the feasibility for those observations.
