This paper introduces one of the candidate plans to remove large debris on orbit using Electro-Dynamic Tether (EDT). There exist a number of technical challenges to extend the EDT for the length of up to 5 km on orbit. The authors modeled the tether with several embedded masses connected with tether segments composed of springs and dampers. Firstly, the simulation is conducted with no control of the chaser and passive extension is simulated. The simulated results suggested that the passive approach can extend the whole EDT. However the whole system fluctuate with a neglectable amplitude after the extension of the tether. An actively controlled approach has higher possibilities to suppress the fluctuation observed from the viewpoint of guidance and control, and difficulties for realization are clarified.
