A future space transportation requires a drastically economical system, such as a reusable vehicle and reusable vehicle needs a engine with much high specific impulse to support its heat-protected, heavy structure. A rocket-based combined cycle engine is one of the promising candidates to realized a high efficiency and has been studied for a decade in JAXA. As its operation cycles had been proved by series of experiments and analysis, JAXA has started planning a demonstration of the engine. Prior planning, a short term goal of the RBCC-powered vehicles was set and the technologies required for the vehicles were depicted. Three plans of the flight demonstrator were proposed and their capabilities for validation of each technology were examined. With supplemental ground tests in the wind tunnel, it was concluded that most of the technologies can be verified by the demonstrators though there are still many issues to be solved to realize such flight experiments.
