The handling of fluids was tested during parabolic flights, to obtain basic designing data for the development of the Cell Culture Facility for the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM). Fluids simulating culture media were injected into or drawn from cell culture chambers which were partitioned into two rooms by one porous filter. The results showed that the air/liquid interface could remain undisturbed under the microgravity condition, when one room has one injection/collection port and another has two injection/collection port. This suggests that the air inside the chamber can be replaced by the fluid or vice versa, permitting medium exchange and other handling procedures become easier and simpler.
