The effects of display integration were studied and the results are described in this paper. An experiment with single-loop manual control was conducted. In the experiment, the following three types of display formats were provided to give the operator the control cues: integrated position plus its velocity, separated position and its velocity, and position only. The human describing functions for each display type were identified by applying Akaike’s MFPE (Minimum Final Prediction Error) method to the obtained time series. It was revealed that the integration of the displayed information causes improved control performance, and that the reason for that improvement can be ascribed to human describing functions.
