Simplified models of an accelerometer and a gyro were examined with the aid of simulation. The method for computation of direction cosine and the accumulation of velocity increments are discussed to derive an efficient configuration of navigation. Digital simulation of navigation including gyro and accelerometer dynamics was conducted to search the optimal cycle of computation and to evaluate the effects of error factors. The accuracy of the velocity has proved to depend mainly on the output cycle of the sensors, and the accuracy of position on the integration cycle of the velocity. The scale factor error and bias of the accelerometer are the most significant terms to be compensated. The characteristics of coning drift have been fully investigated by simulation, but an effective method of correction remains to be studied.
