The use of canonical variables and von Zeipel’s method in solving the problem of artificial satellite theory without air drag was studied by Brouwer. The equations of motion in the Lagrangean form have been investigated by Kozai in accordance with Brouwer’s theory. In the present paper the theoretical explanations of the equations of motion derived by Kozai are shown in more detail. The equations are applied to the study of perturbative effects of earth oblateness on the motion of an artificial satellite around the earth. With the aid of eccentricity functions and inclination functions, the spherical harmonic disturbing function is converted to the function of Keplerian elements. By the method of linear perturbations the first and the second order perturbations are determined. The perturbations include coupling effects dependent on the earth’s oblateness and other actions upon the satellite.
