An experimental study was carried out on the wear of several materials rubbed against anodic oxide films on aluminum alloys in liquid nitrogen. The appearance of wear particles and wear track, the wear rate and the transverse moment of the slider were examined. The main findings obtained in this study are as follows : 1.The wear particles left the rubbing surfaces at an early stage of growth ; namely, the fine wear particles were produced when the sliders were rubbed against the anodic oxide films on aluminum alloys. 2.The wear particles grew large between the rubbing surfaces when the sliders were rubbed against the disks of aluminum alloys. From these findings, the authors concluded that the anodic oxide films formed on the rubbing surfaces of aluminum alloys prevented the large-scale growth of wear particles between these rubbing surfaces in cryogenic liquids.
