The high velocity impact response of hybrid fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) plates(carbon, Kevlar and glass fibre) was experimentally studied to determine the influence of laminate structures. Impact velocities from 80-280 m/s were obtained using a high pressure nitrogen gas gun, with all the tested target specimens being mounted in a frame type fixture. The impact and residual velocities were measured by electronic counters connected to a system composed of two photo-cells and two infrared LEDs, and the tangential and radial direction dynamic strains were directly recorded. The delaminated area was subsequently measured by ultrasonic C-scanning, with the damage being characterized by this delaminated area and the energy-absorbing capacity.
