JAXA has been developing a solar power sail spacecraft for Jupiter and Trojan asteroids exploration. The solar sail under study consists of a square-shaped thin polyimide membrane and the membrane is connected to the spacecraft using tethers. In the current design, a centrifugal force, generated by spinning the spacecraft, will deploy the membrane and will maintain its shape after the deployment. Since understanding the deployment dynamics is important for the mission to success, centrifugal deployment experiments using a small-scale membrane were conducted in a vacuum chamber on the ground. The characteristics of the deployment dynamics were analyzed; especially, the effects of tether configuration on the membrane's in-plane vibration were examined.
