A spacecraft for in-orbit servicing needs various attitude control tasks. For example, there are repair or building using robotic arm, rapid maneuvering for inspection or antenna to be pointed to the ground station, and so on. For such situations, Variable Speed Control Moment Gyro (VS-CMG) is suitable. VS-CMG is a kind of CMG that can control its rotational speed like a reaction wheel. Therefore, VS-CMG control logic can be changed from reaction wheel (RW) based logic to CMG based logic or the contrary of that. By using VS-CMC, a satellite for in-orbit servicing can generate high torque in CMG based control logic when torquing the robotic arm and can stabilize its attitude to the Earth in RW based control logic to save energy consumption. In this study, an experimental model of VS-CMG was made and 2-dimentional ground experiment was conducted in which a satellite simulator equipped with the VS-CMG is floating by air pressure and can move using air thrusters.
