Solar Power Satellite (SPS) which has been drawn attention as a future clean energy system remains many issues which should be studied. Construction of a large scale solar panel and transmitting antenna is one of the important subjects toward SPS. We are developing a flatness maintaining system, which utilizes a smart actuator system, of a large-scale panel antenna for SPS. We produced a carbon Nano-tube (CNT) actuator experimentally that is expected to be a light weight and an easy controllability, and carried out the basic experiments in order to evaluate characteristics and performance of the CNT actuators. The CNT actuator consists of CNT electrodes and a separator impregnated with ionic liquid. The CNT actuator works like a capacitor, so the deformation of the CNT actuator can be controlled electrically. We measured and evaluated the dependence of the deformation and the stress on the thickness of the actuators. Also, we evaluated a performance of the actuators under vacuum environment.
