Because the spacecraft is going be exposed to intense sunlight up to 11 suns, the temperature of the solar array is expected to reach as high as 230C. We evaluated the degradation in the electrical output of the solar cells by using high intensity and high temperature (HIHT) tests.Solar cells with coverglasses showed much larger degradation in the electrical output than expected by the degradation in the solar array for the Venus probe AKATSUKI after the HIHT test. In this test, the current output decreased, while the voltage output did not change.To diagnose the cause of the degradation, we tested each component of the solar cell separately. First, we subjected the DC93-500 adhesive, which attach the coverglasses on the solar cells, to the HIHT test, and found out that its transmittance decreased as irradiated by intense light at high temperature. The decrease in the transmittance decreased when more UV light was blocked. Then we illuminated the bare cells through the coverglasses which were held between the bare cells and the light source without using adhesive. After the test, neither the electrical performance of the bare cells nor the transmittance of the coverglasses decreased. Therefore, we concluded that the decreased transmittance of the coverglasses which was caused by the UV irradiation at high temperature led to the decrease in the current output.To minimize the decrease in the transmittance of the DC93-500 adhesive, we chose coverglasses of longer cut-on wavelength, resulting in decreased transmitted UV light. In addition to that, we chose 300-microm thick coverglasses instead of 100-microm ones.As a result, we successfully minimized the degradation in the electrical output of the solar cells to meet the
