The Electrodynamic Tether (EDT) system promises the propellant-less propulsion using Lorentz force induced by the geomagnetic field. The EDT deploys a long conductive tether in space and emits and collects electrons at both ends to make the current flow in the tether. The bare tether is one of the electron collectors for EDT. Advantage of the bare tether is simple, low cost and efficient electron collection.. Exposing the conductive tether directly to ionosphere, however, may cause some problems, such as discharge, anomalous current collection by ionization of neutral gases and heating. These phenomena can break the tether at the worst case. The objective of this study is to investigate the interactions between the bare tether and ionospheric plasma. This study is being conducted as a joint project with JAXA as a part of orbital demonstration mission. In JAXA, EDT system is regarded as a strong candidate for future orbital debris removal mission. We used a vacuum chamber simulating LEO plasma environment by ECR plasma source (Electron density : 10(exp 12)[m(exp -3)]). We biased the test bare tether samples positively or negatively in the chamber and investigated their current collection and threshold potential of discharging. We studied the discharge suppression at the boundary between the insulator part and the bare part of EDT which may expose triple-junction becomes the source of discharge.
