However the functional developments of such cardiopulmonary reflex is still not well understood. It was recently found that a frequency component of the heart rate variability linked to the respiration in the immature low-birth-weight neonates strongly depend on the postnatal period. The frequency components of the heart rate variability in human neonates, rats and amphibians were analyzed and compared during the developments. Frequency analysis with autocorrelation-FFT method was applied to the heart rate and respiration waves to calculate the respiration-linked component in the power spectra. The comparative analysis of the cardiopulmonary reflex using human and rat neonates resulted in a similar developmental status. In case of human immature neonate, respiration-linked frequency component in the heart rate variability was negligible at day-old 0 and significantly increased at postnatal 1 month. The rat neonate also showed no or negligible respiration linked response until days 8 and it became significant approximately postnatal 1 month. However the amphibian (Rana catesbeiana) indicated no clear response in the entire developmental stages even in adult.
