Four Russian cosmonauts were assigned to two subjects and two cameramen during the expeditions of #3 and #5. Eight filmings in the expedition #3 and sixteen filmings in the expedition #5 were performed and recorded with the HDTV camera, during the days from 16 to 117 and from 3 to 152 respectively. The filmed portions of body were frontal face, lateral face including jugular vein, close-up of eyes and hand. The tapes were delivered to Japan and HDTV images were evaluated subjectively by physicians on a Cathode Ray Tube monitor first. Then, still images of frontal face were extracted from tapes in each shot in each session to compare the extent of facial edema, and the area on the frontal face was marked and calculated with a personal computer. The calculated facial area in the expedition #3 increased by 5 - 11 % through the mission and it increased by 8 % on the day 117 in comparison with the pre-flight face. In the expedition #5, the facial area increased and varied by 7 - 10 % during the first month of the flight, and it kept around 10 - 11 % until the day 152. In conclusion, the facial edema due to the fluid shift existed obviously just after the exposure to microgravity, and its extent seemed almost the same until the end of missions. Therefore, the timing when the human cardiovascular system adapted to the space environment could not be estimated with the time course of the facial puffiness.
