Vaporized plume expansion process into a background gaseous environment is calculated by solving one-dimensional Euler equations. The plume of the ablated material is assumed to be a local thermal equilibrium plasma, and the emission and laser beam absorption of the plasma are accounted for in the calculation of the plume expansion process. The flow calculation is coupled with the heat conduction calculation. The technique is applied to compute the time variation of the impulse data for the ablation of an aluminum target using Nd:YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) laser.
