The propulsion model must include parameters accounting for deviations from an ideal sail, such as curvature and wrinkles, and parameters that can be redefined based on in-flight data. In this paper a generalized sail model is presented for describing the force and moment acting on a solar sail of arbitrary constant shape and optical parameters. The force is described using at most 19 independent coefficients while the moment requires a maximum of 36 coefficients. These coefficients are independent of the sail attitude and are only a function of the sail geometry. Thus, the generalized sail model is an analytic formalism for the force and moment acting on a solar sail. Next, applications of the generalized sail model are presented. Computations of the force and moment coefficients are presented for a number of different sail geometries. Forces and moments are computed for this geometries and compared with an ideal sail. Partial derivatives of the generalized sail model with respect to each of the force and moment parameters are derived. Additionally, classical results for a guidance law to optimally orienting the sail to produce a maximum increase in orbital energy and maximum propulsive force are presented based on the generalized sail model and compared with the results obtained for and ideal sail. Finally, an estimation technique is developed for the generalized sail model force coefficients based on in-flight data or ground test data. Both a simplified method, for sail shapes with symmetries, and a general method, for arbitrary sail geometries, are developed. The accuracy of the estimation is dependent on the sail attitude at which the measurements are taken.
