Used is a fiber-coupled type diode laser, lambda 803.1 nm, 60 W output, the core size 400 micrometers and NA is 0.22 (nominal) cooled by a Peltier cooling unit. To focus the laser beam to less than 1 m diameter, 25 cm diameter parabolic mirror is used with a focal length of 60 cm. The optical axis is controllable with an accuracy of 0.83 micro-rad. On the laser light receiving side, 116 pieces of single junction GaAs solar cells are mounted on a 70 cm diameter panel (conversion efficiency: about 20 percent). The 1.2 km test was done at nearby Makino Park Golf Course after the sunset. The rover was set on a grass ground. The coarse tracking of the laser beam is done manually using an IR viewer and CRT image of the beam path transmitted through the wireless LAN system. And the test was performed successfully. A similar experiment was intended at Lanai Island in Hawaii towards Japan-US collaboration.
