They must be properly used according to the feature of satellite missions. In most of the power supply systems for domestic satellites, the upper limit voltage control has been carried out to date by using shunt regulator systems. A peak power tracking (PPT) method has been being developed since 2000 and reported its experimental result last year. In this paper, theoretical and feasibility study on three kinds of PPT method is described, including subsequent study results, which deal with some discussion of spacecraft for deep space missions such as PLANET-C for a Venus mission and MMO (Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter) for a Mercury mission. There are two methods concerning the present mainstream configuration of the satellite power supply systems. One is a shunt regulator system and the other is a series switching regulator (SSR) system. Each system has a regulated bus option and an un-regulated bus one. The PPT method technology is efficiently applicable to the SSR system in the case of a large variation of the solar intensity. The greatest feature of the PPT system can not only use the maximum power of solar cells (Pmax) but also eliminate battery charge circuits by controlling SSR in an un-regulated bus line.
