Aluminum alloys have been widely used in constructing various space structures, including the International Space Station (ISS) and launch vehicles. In order to apply the welding technologies to space environment, welding experiments on the aluminum alloy have been conducted in vacuum using the GHTA (Gas Hollow Tungsten Arc) welding processes. In these experiments, removal mechanism of aluminum-oxide film and the melting phenomena of a filler wire were investigated, in which a high-speed video camera and a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) were employed. The experiments under the various welding conditions in vacuum were performed.
