The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) has launched the engineering test spacecraft 'HAYABUSA' on May 9th, 2003 for the asteroid 'ITOKAWA'. HAYABUSA includes a very tiny rover named 'MINERVA'. MINERVA is the world first rover which will explore over an asteroid surface. The objective of the rover is to conduct some technical experiments about the technologies required in exploring on the surface of small planetary bodies. Thus it was not designed nor developed for scientific purpose. Nevertheless, it holds cameras and thermometers, by which scientific outputs are expected. This paper summarizes the surface exploration strategy of MINERVA, the operational status conducted so far during the cruise to the asteroid, and the readiness on in-situ exploration of asteroid surface. |
