From these results, it is hypothesized that spontaneous arterial-cardiac baroreflex function may be dependent on venous return or central blood volume. Despite extensive study of cardiovascular reflex control after spaceflight, bed rest or hypergravity, there is no reports demonstrating in the same subjects that both acute hypovolemia and hypervolemia lead to changes of cardiac baroreflex function in a 'simple linear dose-dependent' manner. Therefore, we conducted this study to quantify the possible dose-effect relationship between the venous return (central blood volume) and baroreflex regulation of heart rate, by using transfer function analysis and Sequence Technique between spontaneous changes in arterial pressure and R-R interval during acute central hypovolemia (LBNP (Lower Body Negative Pressure) -15, -30 mmHg or furosemide administration) and hypervolemia (saline infusion 15, 30 ml/kg). High frequency transfer function gain and slope of Sequence Technique, as indexes of arterial-cardiac baroreflex function, elevated with increases in central venous pressure or LVEDV (Left Ventricular End-Diastolic Volume), from central hypovolemia of -30 mmHg LBNP to hypervolemia of 15 ml/kg saline infusion. However, these baroreflex indexes decreased at hypervolemia of 30 ml/kg saline infusion. These results may suggest that spontaneous arterial-cardiac baroreflex function is directly proportional to venous return within a certain range, although the baroreflex function is reduced when central blood volume rises over the range. The analysis of this dose-effect relationship can be used for further understanding of the changes in baroreflex function induced by simulated microgravity or space
