We examined the effects of water immersion as a microgravity simulator on beta-1,3:1,4-glucan synthase activity in rice seedlings. Water immersion significantly reduced both amount and molecular weight of beta-1,3:1,4-glucan in the cell walls, stimulating elongation growth of the coleoptiles. The beta-1,3:1,4-glucan synthase activity in the microsome fraction of coleoptiles underwater was decreased to less than 50 percent of that of the control.
