It has been demonstrated that gravitropism and hydrotropism interact one another in determining root growth orientation. It is therefore important to understand the mechanism for which roots integrate multiple environmental cues for the directional growth. However, molecular mechanism of hydrotropism is not understood well, while gravitropism has been extensively studied. Here isolated were five hydrotropism mutant lines of Arabidopsis plant. Roots of root hydrotropism 1 (rhy1) did not show hydrotropism but normally exhibited gravitropism, phototropism and waving response. Roots of rhy4 did not show positive hydrotropism and rather grew away from the side of high water potential. Also, rhy4 showed a reduced waving response. Roots of rhy5 showed ahydrotropic response as rhy1 did, but their elongation growth was reduced during waving response. Roots of rhy2 and rhy3 showed reduced hydrotropism together with altered response in either gravitropism, phototropism or waving response. Thus, obtained were unique hydrotropism mutants of Arabidopsis, which will enable dissection of molecular mechanism of root hydrotropism.
