However, the unit cell volume of the space-grown crystals was slightly smaller than that of the earth-grown ones. Two forms of orthorhombic crystals, form 1 and form 2, of hen egg-white lysozyme (EC 3.2.1.17, HEWL) appeared under the conditions of different growth temperature. Comparison of the molecular packing of these two different crystal forms showed that both crystal forms possessed a common molecular unit consisted of two molecules in the asymmetric unit. However, the molecular packing was quite different from each other. Evaluating Van der Waals energy for the intermolecular interaction, a molecular mechanism of crystal growth of HEWL orthorhombic crystal was proposed. Further, it was emphasized that during the crystal growth protein molecule was incorporated into the nuclei preferentially to complete the molecular unit, and that not a mass more than a dimmer but one protein molecule was a growth unit.
