This study aims to establish a small-scale ground test facility for such aerodynamic characterization at a university laboratory. The Ludwieg type is selected because it can attain calm flows without shocks and pressure disturbances and with moderate steady-state durations sufficiently long for flow field settling and measurements. Its flow characteristics are predicted by quasi-one-dimensional calculation. Design points for flow speeds ranging from Mach 2 to 6 are selected. Its primary components, such as high-pressure tubes, a high-speed opening value, and contoured nozzles of Mach 2 and 3, are designed, constructed and assembled experimentally. Moderately calm supersonic flows are realized in the preliminary runs. The history of the internal pressure immediately upstream the valve agrees well with the theoretical prediction and shows a steady-state flow duration of about 50 ms.
