The relationships between the measured variables agree well with those expected from gravitational separation but clearly differ from those expected from artificial fractionation due to thermal diffusion. Simulations with a 2-dimensional model showed that a relationship between gravitational separation and the age of air in the stratosphere would be significantly affected by changes in the Brewer-Dobson circulation, which indicated gravitational separation is usable as a new indicator of the stratospheric circulation. In this paper, we review the past studies about gravitational separation in the middle atmosphere as well as changes in the Brewer-Dobson circulation briefly, and then summarize the above findings and
