At JAXA curation, continuous reflectance spectral measurements using FTIR and μFTIR are conducted on both bulk and individual returned samples (i.e., Ryugu and Bennu) as the initial description and cataloging process. In this report, we describe instrumental artifacts—found around June 2025—that affected μFTIR spectral measurements performed for the initial description of Bennu samples (Bennu-μFTIR) and for detailed analyses inside the glovebox (GB5-μFTIR). These artifacts were observed only in the macro-mode (aperture size ~500 × 500 μm) of the Bennu-μFTIR and in the GB5-μFTIR analyses. In contrast, no such instrumental artifacts were detected in the micro-mode (~100 × 100 μm) of the Bennu-FTIR and in the Ryugu-FTIR used for the initial description of Ryugu samples. The instrumental artifacts were found to originate from stray light caused by the incident beam from the light source exceeded the effective receiving area of the mirror and reflected on materials around the mirror inside the μFTIR system. In particular, this stray light effect becomes evident in the spectra when a large aperture size (~500 × 500 μm) is used in front of the detector. In contrast, when the aperture is sufficiently narrowed (~100 × 100 μm), stray light from outside the mirror does not reach the detector and therefore does not appear in the spectra. Because Ryugu and Bennu samples exhibit extremely low reflectance, a large aperture size has generally been selected during measurements to secure sufficient signal. As a result, it was found that the stray light effect becomes more likely to appear in the spectra. To mitigate this issue observed under large-aperture (~500 × 500 μm) measurements, the instruments were slightly modified by installing a light-shielding mask by September 2025, which completely eliminated the stray light problem. However, reflectance spectra of Bennu samples obtained prior to this modification, as well as those of Ryugu particles measured during detailed analyses, were affected by the artifacts. As of October 2025, all affected spectral datasets are already available in the public database, and re-measurements are planned. We also tested a correction method for the previously acquired (before modification) spectra. This method effectively reduces false peaks and artificial absorptions by subtracting the identified artifact component. When comparing corrected and remeasured spectra, overall reflectance and spectral shapes do not perfectly match. This difference is likely caused by slight differences in measurement positions and focus between the before- and after-modification analyses of irregularly shaped samples. Accordingly, it should be noted that in the updated Bennu sample database part of FTIR spectra are corrected and contain a little uncertainty in the spectral shape and absolute reflectance. JAXA curation will provide data descriptions, including analytical settings for μFTIR, which will supplement the interpretation of corrected or uncorrected reflectance spectrum data. |
