All the impact tracks were observed with an optical microscope (OM) and some tracks were also analyzed with x-ray CT. We found that characteristic track sizes can be measured with an OM better than an error of ca.15%. Based on our OM data, track length (L(sub t)) was almost proportional to projectile size (d(sub p)) and density (rho(sub p)) whilst maximum hole diameter (D(sub m)) apparently increased only with d(sub p). Therefore we suggest that aspect ratio of each track (L(sub t)/D(sub m)) is a reliable criterion when we estimate rho(sub p) from track shape.
