Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)(ISAS)), Sagamihara, Kanagawa Japan, High velocity impact experiments on layered targets were conducted to investigate the formation mechanism of tiny complex crates with the size less than 1km found on the moon and Mars. Basalt blocks covered with mortal layer with the thickness from 2 to 30 mm were impacted by nylon projectiles at the velocity from 2 and 4 km/s. The crater morphology was changed from a simple crater to a flat floor crater and then to a concentric crater with the increase of projectile kinetic energies and with the decease of the mortal thickness (T). In the case of the concentric crater, we found that the pit depth formed on the basalt block (d(sub b)) was successfully scaled by the following equation, dd(sub b)/dd(sub b0)=1-T/l, where l is the penetration depth of the projectile., 形態: カラー図版あり, Physical characteristics: Original contains color illustrations, 資料番号: AA0065116020}, publisher = {宇宙航空研究開発機構宇宙科学研究所 (JAXA)(ISAS), Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)(ISAS)}, title = {Experimental study on impact craters formed on basalt target covered with weak mortal layer}, volume = {43}, year = {2010} }
