Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)), Sagamihara, Kanagawa Japan, Using THEMIS-IR and Viking images and MOLA topography data, we mapped clusters of valley networks, which dissect Noachian and post-Noachian terrains, and thus are representative of Noachian and more geologically recent surface environments. In the Naktong Vallis and surrounding region, 36 major Noachian valley network systems, whose total length is greater than 66,000 sq km, were mapped, characterized, and compiled. Drainage areas range from 9,000 to 210,000 km2 and the drainage densities from 0.07 to 0.63. We find strong correlation between the mean slopes and the drainage densities in this Noachian terrain, indicating that the drainage density was likely controlled by the overall slope of the precipitation area at the time of valley network formation. We also map post-Noachian valley networks, which dissect the flanks of Uranius, Ceraunius, and Hecates Tholi and Hadriaca and Apollinaris Paterae. The correlation between drainage densities and mean slopes does not exist in every case, indicating that the valley network formational process varied locally. For example, whereas local precipitation may have been more influential in valley network formation on the flanks of Hadriaca and Apollinaris Paterae, other processes may have been more dominant in the dissection of the flanks of Uranius, Ceraunius, and Hecates Tholi., 形態: カラー図版あり, 形態: CD-ROM1枚, Physical characteristics: Original contains color illustrations, Note: One CD-ROM, 資料番号: AA0064739002}, pages = {8--11}, publisher = {宇宙航空研究開発機構宇宙科学研究本部, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)}, title = {Detailed mapping and statistical analysis of Noachian and post-Noachian valley networks: implications to the history of martian surface environment}, volume = {42}, year = {2009} }
