Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)), Sagamihara, Kanagawa Japan, Recent flyby and rendezvous missions to S-type asteroids revealed that their surfaces are covered with considerable amount of regolith. To fully understand their nature and origin, we need further quantitative analysis. Here, we mapped and characterized in detail all rocks, above the resolution limit of the high-resolution images acquired during the Hayabusa mission. This included compiling information on ca.20,000 rock materials ranging from m-size boulders to cm-size pebbles, which cover the main body of Itokawa. Though the slope indices of the cumulative-size-frequency-distribution plots of the rock materials show a value of -3, approximately matching those of lunar craters, the value changes to -1 around 1-2 m. This trend is consistent with the putative impact origin of the boulders considering the scale effect in the strength regime of the boulders and geometric-saturation., 形態: カラー図版あり, 形態: CD-ROM1枚, Physical characteristics: Original contains color illustrations, Note: One CD-ROM, 資料番号: AA0064739025}, pages = {104--107}, publisher = {宇宙航空研究開発機構宇宙科学研究本部, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)}, title = {A Statistical Study on the Putative Impact Origin of Boulders Covering S-type Asteroids}, volume = {42}, year = {2009} }
